Ferihegy airport is located 24km (15 miles) southeast of Budapest. There are two terminals, approximately four kilometres (2.5 miles) apart. Terminal one is for cargo freight planes. Terminal 2A is for the national airline Malév (and partner airlines, such as Lufthansa, Delta and Alitalia), while terminal 2B is used by all other airlines. In 2000, 4.6 million passengers used Ferihegy airport, which provides good links with Western and Eastern Europe.

Major airlines: The national airline, Malév MA (tel: (01) 235 3535; fax: (01) 266 2685; website: www.malev.hu), operates flights to 48 cities, including long-haul scheduled flights to New York, Toronto, Beijing and Bangkok. Aeroflot, Air France, British Airways, KLM and Lufthansa offer regular services to Budapest.

Approximate flight times to Budapest: From London is 2 hours 20 minutes; from New York is 9 hours 45 minutes; from Los Angeles is 19 hours 15 minutes; from Toronto is 9 hours 40 minutes and from Sydney is 26 hours 30 minutes.

Airport facilities: Facilities include a duty-free shop, florist, newsagent, restaurant, bar, gift shop, post office, bureaux de change, banks and car hire, which is provided by Airport Rent-a-Car, Avis, Europcar and Hertz.

Business facilities: A new Cirrus business lounge (tel: (01) 296 5933), for Malév’s passengers, equipped with telephone, fax and computers, and a Millennium Lounge (tel: (01) 296 7357) for business passengers using foreign airlines have opened in terminal 2B. The Duna Lounge (tel: (01) 296 8706) is also available in terminal 2A. Business travellers should allow for plenty of time between touchdown at Ferihegy airport and meetings in the city centre.

Arrival/Departure tax: None.

Transport to the city: The easiest way to the city centre from Ferihegy is by LRI’s Airport Minibus Shuttle (tel: (01) 296 8555), which takes visitors to any address in the city (journey time – approximately 40 minutes). The bus operates every half an hour, daily 0530-2100. Single (Ft1800) or return (Ft3300) tickets can be purchased from LRI’s passenger service desks or booked before departure. The service also picks up passengers at hotels or private addresses for the return flight. The Budapest Card (see Sightseeing) includes travel on the Minibus Shuttle.

LRI’s Centrum Minibuses (tel: (01) 296 8555) depart every 30 minutes for Erzsébet tér bus station, daily 0600-2200. Tickets cost Ft800 and are sold on the bus.

The public bus 93 travels to Kobánya-Kispest metro station (passengers may wish to alight at Deák tér, where all three metro lines converge). Buses with the number 93 displayed in black serve only Ferihegy terminal one, buses with a red 93 serve both terminals. A pre-purchased Ft200 ticket, available at vending machines or tobacconists in the airport, is required. This is valid for two transit tickets, one for the bus to Kobánya-Kispest and the other for for the metro (blue line) to the middle of Pest.

Taxis are available at all times – the fare to the city centre should cost between Ft5000 and Ft8000.
